Could a simple breath test diagnose disease?
Abstract:
1 in 2 of us will develop cancer at some point in our lifetimes. Our healthcare systems face two fundamental challenges today: too many patients are diagnosed when it’s too late to cure them, and too many patients are on medication that has no benefit for them. Billy discusses why early detection is our greatest opportunity to address these challenges and save lives, and how the chemicals we exhale in our breath could provide a novel way to improve early detection.
Every breath contains thousands of volatile organic compounds which are directly linked to our metabolism, microbiome, lifestyle and environment, and can act as biomarkers for a wide range of diseases.
Drawing on his own experience, Billy highlights how patients’ lives, healthcare costs and personalised treatment can be markedly improved through the development of non-invasive breath tests for disease.
