Breath analysis is an alternative yet complementary sampling medium for microbiome analysis and microbiome research to commonly used mediums such as urine and fecal matter. Discover the potential of the microbiome through our webinar, ‘Using Exhaled Breath to Analyze the Gut Microbiome’.

Hosted by Owlstone Medical’s Principal Translational Scientist Dr. Nabeetha Nagalingam and VP of Business Development, Research Products and Services Dr. Huw Davies, this webinar is for researchers interested in exploring the use of non-invasive breath biomarkers in relation to the microbiome, and anyone with an interest in learning more about the potential of breath research for clinical practice.

Microbiome Times Webinar 2023 Speakers

This webinar covers:

  • The unique advantages of breath analysis in microbiome research
  • Key applications of breath analysis including, measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in different disease contexts
  • Several case studies in which breath analysis had been used to provide insight in to microbial activity and gastrointestinal disease
  • The potential for at-home breath collection and analysis for decentralized clinical trials and improved diagnostic capabilities

Hydrogen and methane are two gases produced by the microbiome through the fermentation of food in the gastrointestinal tract. These gases are therefore biomarkers of microbiome metabolism and can be measured in exhaled breath via hydrogen and methane breath tests (HMBTs) to diagnose gastrointestinal disease, including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Breath analysis has also identified other biomarkers of microbiome metabolism such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like acetate and butyrate. Our Breath Biopsy® technology can be used to detect and analyze VOCs such as SCFAs in breath that relate to the microbiome.
