September through December at Owlstone Medical
Owlstone Medical has had an exciting few months attending a variety of events, partnering with leading institutions, and hosting our annual Breath Biopsy Conference. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening:
Major Collaborations and Research AdvancementsIn September, we embarked on a groundbreaking 5-year collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Together, we’re working to develop improved methods for identifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath, which will support the development of our Breath Biopsy VOC Atlas®—a vital resource for biomarker research. This partnership is an important step toward advancing non-invasive breath-based biomarker discovery and diagnostics.
Careers Events
We attended a mix of local events in Cambridge including the University careers fair and the Women in STEM event from Cambridge Network. Speaking with people about life at Olwstone Medical was a chance to showcase what we do – whether you’re interested in the ins and outs of breath research or would like to learn about another area such as finance, manufacturing or sales. Apart from this, we are keen to mention our thriving social life including both sports and all-company events.
Chariots of Fire Run
This year we had several teams show up for a very rainy relay race that takes place in the city center. The organizers have now raised over £1.5m for local charities with a goal of £100,000 pounds being raised in 2024 for Magpas Air Ambulance. Although the competition was high, we managed to scrape 4th and 5th place in our mixed and all-women’s team this year. We have set our hopes high for 2025 to beat our personal best’s over the three-kilometre distance that each person runs.
Conferences and Global Engagement
We’ve been busy presenting our ground breaking work at major global conferences, including in Vienna and California. At these events, we shared our research on how breath analysis can offer valuable insights into gut health and liver diseases. In November, we hosted the Breath Biopsy Conference 2024, which brought together over 400 delegates through Zoom to discuss the latest developments in breath-based diagnostics over the course of two days. This conference was an important milestone for us, showcasing our leadership in this rapidly advancing field.
Apart from this we also attended IHR in London – “the ultimate exhibition for the talent acquisition industry, bringing together in-house recruiters for a day of inspiration, learning, innovation, and networking”. At Owlstone we make sure to keep up to date in every department and have training opportunities for our employees, such as the early careers scheme which is overseen by the Learning and Development Coordinator, Roxy Toma. It involves monthly sessions for nine months to help the newer members of the team to grow and develop both personally and professionally.
Awards and Industry Recognition
Our efforts were also recognized at the SME Cambridgeshire Business Awards, where we won gold for OMED Health’s ‘Website of the Year’ and silver for Owlstone Medical as ‘Employer of the Year.’ These wins reflect our ongoing innovation and commitment to creating a positive workplace culture. We were also proud to be named finalists in both the European Lifestars Awards and the OBN (UK) Ltd Awards, further affirming our position as a leader in the MedTech industry.
Community Engagement and Charity Initiatives
Alongside our scientific progress, we’ve been dedicated to giving back to the community. We ran our version of The Great British Bake Off, where our employees baked and sold treats to raise money for various charitable causes. Thanks to the generosity of our team, we raised over £300 for organizations such as Pancreatic Cancer UK and the Snow Leopard Trust. This initiative highlights our commitment to making a positive impact within the community.
Looking Ahead
Looking forward, we’re excited to continue our mission of revolutionizing breath-based diagnostics. In 2025, we will host the next Breath Biopsy Conference, where we’ll continue sharing knowledge between experts in the field. Additionally, in January, Dr. Rui Lopes will be presenting a webinar on how breath analysis can be used to monitor the effects of dietary interventions on health.
It’s been a productive and rewarding few months for us at Owlstone Medical, and we’re thrilled to continue building on our successes. We’re committed to advancing breath-based diagnostics and improving healthcare outcomes for people around the world. We look forward to what the future holds and to sharing more exciting developments with you in 2025!
